Mixmag review of the Highbury Dub EP

Im pleased to say that I have just recived my first review , big up Joe Muggs for writing it:

Highbury Dub EP

Moody, broody late-night tunes

Though these are definitely not going to tear up the dance, there is a brilliant "driving through the city at night" feel to this new producer's distinctive sound, and he has a grasp of proper dubwise echo FX that few can match - plus some nice reggae horns. These three tracks are very similar, but there's a lot of real promise.

3/5 headphones

Nows it time to get stuck in creating Interloper.

Music i'm feeling...

Easy,

Its been a nice relaxing last couple of weeks, and during my down time from working on the Interloper EP I have had some time to enjoy some new and forthcoming new music.

I have always been a big fan of MF DOOM and his many pseudonyms, and with his current DOOM moniker he teams up the the late J Dilla, Ghostface, Raekwon and many others to deliver an album that has all of the lyrical clout expect from these names. So far its one of my favorite albums of the year.

I have been highly anticipating the new Mos Def album as well, and after hearing "Casa Bey", which was produced by Madlib I am even more excited about his forthcoming album, "The Ecstatic", which drops on the 9th of June.

Check it out, the bassline is swinging...

I recently saw this interview with Mos Def chatting about DOOM and it made me realise just how deep DOOM's lyrics are. Maybe one day we will get a MOS-DOOM album...

cracks me ups

The Highbury Dub EP is now Available in Lossless Formats, and the Trials of Designing a New Logo...

I took my friends advice and have uploaded the Highbury Dub EP to Bandcamp. Now you can buy it in any lossless file format your heart desires.

I have been expirmenting with Logos and the next EP's artwork, i'm no Graphic Designer but im pretty pleased with the idea so far. Im going to see if I can get a real Graphic designer to make something for me based on this idea. Watch this space...

Cutting Out the Middle Man Dem.....

Yesterday I was talking to a friend of mine called Simon Panrucker. He asked me if there was anyway other way for him to buy the Highbury Dub EP digitaly as he doesn't like itunes ,etc.

He told me about a website called Bandcamp.com which lets you host and sell your music. The best part being that anything you make goes straight into your pay pal account. Also Its lets the customer choose what file format they want the music in.

So for all you Lossless audio needs check out Lethem at Bandcamp

Highbury Dub EP update, Interloper, General Rambling and my first adventures with Funky...

First of all I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported my Highbury Dub EP so far, its been very nice waking up to messages left by people who are enjoying my music. Those of you who have been asking about the vinyl release, its going here to be mastered at the end of the month. So hopefully it won't be long after that.

The Interloper EP is coming along nicely. I have finished LNB and you can here a demo of the track here. Im looking to get this finished for mid summer.

This past week has been very cool, it's been nice catching up with people i haven't seen in a while, checking out new music and going to some good nights.

I picked up a copy of DOOM's (MF Doom's new alias) new record "Born Like This", and I am very impressed, he's on point and here are a lot of big names featured as well, Jdilla, Madlib and Raekwon to name a few. I highly recommend checking it out.

I also picked up a copy of Roots Manuvas "Slime & Reason", i think its bloody brilliant, Mr. Smith never fail's to deliver. Deep words mixed with positive vibrations. Plus it finally showed me why people play cricket.

I was lucky enough this week to be able to check out some good nights. We made a rare trip down to Fabric to a night called Adventures In The Beetroot Field, it was pretty good but my highlight of the week came from a Funky night called Chocablock at a club called EGG in North London.

My friend Paul from www.grimetapes.com has been telling me about Funky for a while now and I thought it was about time i checked it out... What can I say it was refreshing to go to a rave and see people having fun and dancing, without the added hype or agro you get at some nights.

So whats next?

Im going to Berlin on Friday for the weekend. I'm looking forward to checking out some Minimal and other delights the city has to offer.

Oh and there's a review of Highbury Dub coming out in May...

Till next time

The Sounds that Insipred the Highbury Dub EP

Here are five pieces of music that inspired me to make the Highbury Dub EP:

Rhythm & Sound Feat. Cornell Campbell - King in my Empire

This is the record that introduced me to Basic Channel, cornell campbell and the whole Dub Techno sound.

Basic Channel/Rhythm & sound

Rockers HIFI - Transmission Central

Another pioneer of the early Electronic Dub Sound were the west midlands Rockers HIFI, Farda P the groups main MC is my uncle and hopefully he will be toasting on the forthcoming Interloper EP.

My father reintoduced their music to me just after Xmas. Check them out here

2562 - Channel 2

2562's album Ariel rekindled my love of dubstep, it also introduced me to the minimal sound.

Cornell Campbel - Drifter Riddem

This is one of my favorite Reggae songs, I just love his voice.

Autechre - Drane

This is my favorite Autechre track. It inspired me to make Blix.
